许多原子核的运动类似“自旋体”,不停地以一定的频率自旋。如果把物体放置磁场,原子核可以在磁场中旋转。磁场的强度和方向,决定原子核旋转的频率和方向。在磁场旋转的原子核有一个特点,即可以吸收频率与旋转频率相同的电磁波,使原子核的能量增加;当原子核恢复原状时,就会把多余的能量以电磁波的形式释放出来;用适当的电磁波照射它,然后分析它释放的电磁波,就可以得知构成这一物体的原子核的位置和种类,据此绘制物体内部精确的立体图像。

由于磁共振成像与X射线、CT等原理完全不同,故对人体没有兵贵神速,几乎适用于全身各系统不同疾病的检测;尤其对颅脑、脊椎和脊髓疾病的检测,更能显示它优于CT。它可以不用血管造影剂即显示血管结构,故对血管、肿块、淋巴结和血管结构之间的鉴别更加独到。它对软组织的分辨能力高于CT数倍,能够敏感地检测出组织成分中水含量的变化,因而常比CT更有效亦更早地发现病变。磁共振成像技术的优越性,使得这项新的影像学技术越来越显示出强大的生命力。
